WW1 Veteran: Rev. William White, 2021. JACooke

  • Canadian born, Rev. William White, was chaplain for the No. 2 Construction Battalion in WW1. This was the largest Black unit in Canadian history, formed to enable the enlistment of Black soldiers offering support, accepted in the form of construction but not combat. White was a Black Officer (non commissioned), and Honorary Captain, at times treated as a 2nd class citizen, was unaccepted as a chaplain, even if a unit did not have one.
