WW1 Veteran: Lionel Turpin, 2019. JACooke
Lionel Fitzherbert Turpin a Guyanese soldier in the British Army who fought during the First World War. He was born in 1896, in Georgetown, British Guiana. A merchant seaman, Turpin enlisted in the army aged around 19 in August 1915, at York, in England. Turpin a Rifleman (Private) in the Warwickshire Regiment of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, served with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1916, 1917 and 1918. He faced the usual challenges as a Black man being recruited to the forces but those in charge at the York depot were prepared to turn a blind eye. He eventually died of bronchitis and emphysema in a Birmingham hospital March 1929. He was recognised as very loyal to his King and country.
